School Performances

Theatre of Youth has always been dedicated to providing enriching experiences for the youth of WNY. While our plays are certainly entertaining, we pride ourselves on performing shows that have underlying themes and messages that are important for all children. Whether it be highlighting the impact of bullying; demonstrating empathy, awareness, and sharing; questioning ethical dilemmas like plagiarism; or dealing as we will this year with acceptance, diversity, and self-identity; Theatre of Youth provides a safe, responsible, alternative space to explore and practice the fundamental tools of Common Core. Not only that, we all don’t even realize the great things we are learning because we are having so much fun while we do it!

SECRET SOLDIERS: HEROINES IN DIGUISE by Wendy Lement

FIELD TRIP PERFORMANCES | FOR AGES 8+

March 1 – 16, 2023. Approx. 75 minutes, no intermission.

The secret history of women who fought as men in the civil war is revealed in this engrossing production. Several stories are uncovered in an interlocking set of true tales of battlefront women, with a focus on solider Private Lyons Wakeman (a.k.a Sarah Wakeman) whose letters were discovered by her nephew in an attic years after her death.

In this unique production, the audience is enlisted to be medical officers who will decide the fate of Lyons Wakeman: whether the medical record will reflect this individual’s birth gender (and thus be denied a pension), or keep history hidden and receive all the benefits of military service.

Written by Wendy Lement, and tells the true stories of women who fought in the Civil War as men.
